A high-vis shirt, a hard hat and a long day on site can create a false sense of protection. But UV radiation reaches exposed skin well before a worker feels hot, and cumulative exposure across years of roofing, farming, landscaping, roadworks, construction or delivery work can cause lasting damage. This outdoor worker sun safety guide sets out practical ways to reduce that risk – and the skin changes that should never be put off.
Australia has some of the world’s highest rates of skin cancer. For people who work outside, sun protection is not a summer extra or a personal preference. It is a workplace health issue. Every minute spent exposed to high UV adds to the damage, even on cool, cloudy or windy days.
Why outdoor work raises skin cancer risk
Sunburn is an obvious warning sign, but it is not the only concern. UV radiation can damage skin cells without producing immediate redness or pain. A worker may spend years getting a small amount of exposure each day, particularly on the face, ears, neck, forearms, hands and lower legs. Over time, that exposure can contribute to melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
The risk is not limited to fair-skinned Australians. People with darker skin can develop skin cancer too, often in areas that are less routinely checked or after a delay in diagnosis. Anyone with a personal or family history of skin cancer, many moles, a history of severe sunburn, immune suppression or ongoing outdoor work should be especially alert.
UV is also not the same as temperature. A cold morning on a building site can still have a dangerous UV level. In Australia, sun protection is recommended whenever the UV Index is 3 or above. Checking the daily UV forecast before heading out gives crews and supervisors a useful prompt to plan breaks, protective clothing and sunscreen reapplication.
Outdoor worker sun safety guide: make protection routine
The strongest approach combines several forms of protection. Sunscreen matters, but it cannot compensate for bare skin, inadequate shade or hours of unplanned exposure. Think of it as one layer in a system designed to keep UV off the skin in the first place.
Cover skin with work-appropriate clothing
Choose long-sleeved, closely woven shirts and long trousers where the job permits. Darker or densely woven fabrics generally provide better protection than thin, loose-weave materials. Some workwear is rated for ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF, which can help when selecting uniforms for regularly exposed teams.
Clothing must also be workable. In hot conditions, breathable long-sleeve workwear may be more practical than short sleeves if workers can access water, shade and sensible rest breaks. Safety requirements still apply: clothing should fit properly and not introduce risks around machinery, heat or manual tasks.
A broad-brimmed hat, bucket-style hat with a deep brim, or legionnaire-style flap offers more protection than a baseball cap. Hard hats can be fitted with neck flaps and brims where appropriate. Don’t forget UV-rated wraparound sunglasses that meet Australian standards. Eyes are vulnerable to UV damage, and ordinary safety glasses may not cover the sides of the face sufficiently.
Use sunscreen correctly, not sparingly
Apply broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 50+ sunscreen to skin that cannot be covered. That includes the face, ears, neck, hands and any exposed forearms or lower legs. Put it on before work starts, rather than waiting until the first smoko or when the sun feels strong.
Most people use too little. Adults generally need around one teaspoon per limb, front and back of the body, and one teaspoon for the face, neck and ears. Reapply every two hours, and more often after heavy sweating, towel drying or washing. Keep sunscreen in a place where heat will not degrade it, rather than leaving it on a ute dashboard or in direct sun.
Sunscreen should not be used to justify staying in the sun longer. It is a backup layer, not a permit for extra exposure.
Plan work around UV where possible
Some exposure cannot be avoided, but schedules can reduce it. Where a supervisor has control over tasks, consider doing work that requires full sun earlier or later in the day, and move paperwork, equipment checks, loading or sheltered tasks into higher-UV periods where practical.
Shade is valuable at crib areas, site meetings, field stations and waiting points. Temporary marquees, fixed shelters and shade from structures can all reduce direct exposure. Shade is not total protection because UV reflects from surfaces such as concrete, sand, water and pale metal, so clothing, hats and sunscreen still matter.
Workers also need permission to protect themselves. A culture that treats hats, sleeves and sunscreen as inconvenient can leave people exposed. A culture that makes them standard PPE is far more likely to prevent harm.
Build sun safety into the workday
Sun protection works best when it is easy to do. Employers can provide SPF 50+ sunscreen at entry points, in vehicles and near wash stations, with pump bottles or dispensers that are clearly visible. Supervisors can include UV conditions in pre-start talks and make protective clothing part of the uniform standard.
For individual workers, a simple routine is often enough: check the UV forecast, cover up before leaving home, apply sunscreen before starting, then reapply at scheduled breaks. Set a reminder on your mobile if two-hour reapplication is easy to forget. This is particularly useful during long shifts where attention is naturally focused on the job in front of you.
Do not ignore a changing spot
Prevention lowers risk, but it does not remove it. Skin cancer can appear on skin that has been protected, and outdoor workers should check their skin regularly. Ask a partner, family member or trusted colleague to help look at hard-to-see areas such as the back, scalp, ears and backs of the legs.
Book a clinical skin check promptly if you notice a new or changing mole, a spot that looks different from the others, or a sore that does not heal. Other warning signs include a lesion that bleeds, crusts, itches, hurts or repeatedly breaks down; a pearly or shiny bump; or a rough, scaly patch that persists. Skin cancers are not always dark. They can be pink, red, skin-coloured, brown or nearly colourless.
The ABCDE approach can help identify concerning pigmented lesions: asymmetry, an irregular border, varied colour, a diameter that is growing, and evolution or change over time. But it is not a complete test. A melanoma may be small, and non-melanoma skin cancers can look like a stubborn pimple, dry patch or minor injury. If a spot is new, changing or simply concerning, get it assessed rather than trying to diagnose it yourself.
When a skin check should move up the list
Routine professional skin checks can be particularly worthwhile for workers with long-term occupational sun exposure, a previous skin cancer, a strong family history of melanoma, many atypical moles or immune suppression. The right interval depends on your personal risk and should be discussed with a GP or qualified skin cancer clinician.
Do not wait for an annual check if you have noticed a suspicious change. Early assessment gives clinicians the best chance to diagnose and treat skin cancer before it becomes more serious. This is especially true for melanoma, where delays can have serious consequences.
If your workplace does not provide adequate sun-protective options, raise it with your supervisor, health and safety representative or employer. Protective workwear, accessible sunscreen and shade are practical controls, not luxuries. Your skin is doing the same shift you are, and it deserves protection before damage becomes a diagnosis.
